The Connecticut Choral Society

Founded in 1980 by a small gathering of singers, the Connecticut Choral Society has grown into an enduring presence in the musical life of Western Connecticut. Across more than four decades, its history has been shaped by the dedication of its members, the imagination of its artistic leadership, and audiences who value the expressive power of voices joined together. From its earliest rehearsals, the Society has carried forward a conviction that continues to guide its work: great choral music belongs within the life of a community.
That conviction has taken the Society from Connecticut’s churches and concert halls to Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and performances abroad. Encounters with distinguished artists, orchestral collaborations, and international concert experiences have broadened its musical perspective while deepening its regional roots. Its repertoire embraces the great choral masterworks alongside contemporary compositions and less familiar music worthy of discovery, sustaining a conversation between inherited tradition and the artistic possibilities of the present.
Under Artistic Director and Conductor Eric Dale Knapp, the Society brings thoughtful preparation, musical insight, and expressive purpose to this evolving legacy. Its history also encompasses performances dedicated to charitable causes and occasions of collective remembrance, including a concert of solace for the Newtown community following the Sandy Hook tragedy. Such undertakings reflect a longstanding understanding that artistic achievement and public service can strengthen one another.
Today, the Connecticut Choral Society draws singers from communities throughout the region, united by a commitment to the art of choral singing and the responsibility of bringing it to life. Each performance adds to a history still being written with the voices of its singers, the generosity of its supporters, and the presence of everyone who comes to listen.
